Michael Speakman formed HFB Financial Planning with Neil Swainson in October 2013.
Michael and Neil met at HSBC where Michael spent 26 years working with clients to help them create a strong financial future for themselves, their family and their business.
Michael's career at HSBC started in the retail side of the bank where he progressed into branch management. He then took a role as a financial adviser providing tailored financial planning advice to personal clients, helping build and protect their wealth for the benefit of their families.
In the mid 1990's he took a position working within the commercial market as a Commercial Financial Planning Manager which then led to a position as a Commercial IFA. He then progressed to Area Commercial Wealth Manager looking after a team of Financial Advisers providing advice to both commercial and personal clients.
Michael then moved into the regional management team looking after Commercial Independent advisers and restricted Commercial Wealth Managers. He ensured the team maintained the highest professional standards and technical expertise making sure the client always came first.
During the early part of 2013 there were major changes within HSBC as the bank decided to withdraw face to face holistic financial planning to its commercial customers. This gave Michael and his colleagues an exciting future and HFB was formed.
HFB Financial Planning aims to provide Holistic financial planning to both Families and Businesses.
Michael is a professionally qualified financial adviser with a successful track record of providing holistic financial planning advice to clients as well as leading and motivating teams in a fast paced, regulated environment. He is a firm believer in doing what is right for the client and maintaining a very high standard of service to those clients. The main reason for forming HFB was to continue this service proposition within the Commercial and Personal market place.

After completing a Business and Finance degree, Neil has spent the last 20 years helping clients achieve a prosperous and secure future through focused and effective financial planning.
Neil started his career with Britannic Assurance plc providing tailored financial planning advice to personal clients, helping build and protect their wealth for the benefit of their families. In the late 1990's he took a position as a Financial Planning Manager for HSBC Bank PLC. Throughout the 15 years Neil worked at HSBC he provided advice to both commercial and personal clients through the branch network and commercial centres.
Neil's skills and knowledge allowed him to progress to regional management level within HSBC bank, managing teams of independent and restricted commercial financial planning advisers across the Midlands. This role involved providing coaching, technical expertise and regulatory risk management, whilst being accountable for the operational and professional standards of his people.
The changing business environment presented Neil and his colleagues with an exciting opportunity in the summer of 2013, when HSBC bank decided to withdraw its service of providing face to face holistic financial planning to its commercial customers. Neil took the opportunity to leave the bank after 15 years and along with his HSBC colleague Michael Speakman formed HFB Financial Planning Ltd.
HFB Financial Planning aims to provide Holistic financial planning to both Families and Businesses.
Neil is a professionally qualified financial adviser with a successful background of both providing financial planning advice to clients and leading and motivating teams in a fast paced regulated environment. He is enthusiastic and has strong communication and relationship building skills with a well-balanced attitude to both work and life. He believes in core values of honesty and integrity in all relationships and these ethics are at the heart of HFB Financial Planning Ltd.
Outside of work...
Neil has played competitive Water Polo for the last 25 years, playing for both Rotherham and South Derbyshire and despite his advancing years and sporting injuries, continues to do so. Neil also enjoys snowboarding, sailing, travelling and spending time with his wife and young children.
Steve has been a professional financial adviser for over 32 years, gaining a wide range of experience throughout all sectors of the market. He has enjoyed a successful career that began as a home service agent with the CIS before promotion to a district life inspector with the company. He believes that it was this grounding where he learnt and understood the benefit of customer service and building long standing trusted relationships with his clients. Steve has followed this principle ever since with a simple philosophy - 'if you wouldn't do it for your mum, don't do it!'
In the early 1980s Steve joined the TSB bank plc as a financial adviser and then moved on to work at HSBC bank plc where he spent the next 21 years of his career. Whilst at HSBC, Steve worked across a number of branches and commercial centres within the East Midlands building a strong network of clients and professional contacts. Steve spent the majority of his time at HSBC helping businesses within the commercial arena, identifying and satisfying their financial planning needs as well as the personal requirements of the company principals.

Steve took the opportunity to leave the bank and join some of his old colleagues as one of the Primary Members of the financial adviser team at HFB Financial Planning Ltd.
Steve prides himself on customer service, understanding client needs and gaining trust through long term relationships. Although now more senior in years, he is very happy to be part of a team that shares his beliefs.
In his spare time, apart from enjoying his holidays, he is a keen lifelong follower of Derby County and enjoys watching most sports, particularly cricket. Even though his playing days are now over, the odd game of golf apart, he still enjoys playing league pool during the winter to keep fit! He is also now an active supporter of Guide Dogs as well as a devoted grandad to his 4 grandchildren.
David joined HSBC Bank plc after leaving school, spending the first 8 years of his career in retail banking. In 1994, David decided to take a position as a Financial Planning Manager for HSBC and progressed to Senior Commercial Financial Adviser in the Nottingham and Lincolnshire areas. He spent the next 19 years successfully helping personal and commercial clients build and protect their wealth through focussed and effective holistic financial planning.

He is enthusiastic and has chosen to remain in a client facing role as he enjoys meeting clients and helping them plan for their long term future. David has spent his entire career building his brand through honesty, integrity, technical expertise and taking a straight forward approach to helping clients achieve their goals and aspirations.
Outside of work David enjoyed a long career in both football and cricket in the Nottingham area. He played cricket in the Notts Premier League, including a spell as captain of his club. In his youth he represented Notts at cricket and South Notts at football. After being forced to retire from football in 2003 and cricket in 2006 through a serious knee injury, he took up golf and is a member of Springwater Golf Club where he currently plays off a handicap of 9.
David enjoys spending time with his wife and young son, especially watching his son play football. He also enjoys music, theatre, socialising and watching any sport on TV!

In 1989 Rob was of one of the youngest employees to secure a place on Midland Bank's Management Development Programme, giving him the opportunity to gain experience in all aspects of retail banking, across a wide range of roles and geographic areas.
In 1996 Rob was introduced to financial planning when he was asked to undertake a new role focused on providing clients with mortgages and associated protection. After a successful 18 months as a Financial Planning Officer, he gained his first managerial position and became an Account Manager working with business customers and servicing their banking requirements. During this time Rob decided that financial planning was the direction he wished to take his career and secured a Financial Planning Manager position with HSBC (formerly Midland Bank plc).
After spending six years advising personal clients on their financial planning needs, he moved into the commercial sector. Rob has spent the next 9 years helping businesses within the commercial market place identify and satisfy their financial planning needs, along with the personal requirements of the company principals.

After completing A' levels in Business Studies and Sociology, Terry has spent the last 21 years assisting clients with their financial planning objectives and helping them to work towards their goals and future aspirations.
Terry started his financial planning career at NatWest Bank, providing personal financial advice, helping clients to preserve and grow their wealth whilst protecting themselves and their families. He progressed to the role of Business Financial Planning Manager, giving him the opportunity to broaden his skills within the more complex corporate environment.
After 14 years with NatWest, Terry moved to HSBC Bank plc taking the role of Commercial Financial Planning Manager within the bank's commercial banking segment. Terry demonstrated his skills and expertise in this market place and was quickly promoted to the position of Senior Corporate Financial Adviser. During this time he worked closely with the commercial and corporate teams within HSBC, providing advice to high net worth individuals as well as meeting the demanding needs of corporate entities both large and small.

Terry took the opportunity to leave the bank and join some of his HSBC colleagues as one of the Primary Members of the financial adviser team at HFB Financial Planning Ltd.
Terry's success within financial services has derived from his professionalism, honesty, integrity and adherence to the principles of providing best advice to his clients.
Outside of work Terry enjoys spending time with his family. He also enjoys playing golf, photography and mountain biking.
James has worked in Financial Services across three global banks over the last decade and his decision to join HFB Financial Planning comes from a desire to offer a more distinct and bespoke approach to financial planning.
James attended University in Nottingham where his European Studies degree enabled him to spend a year in Provence and study human and urban geography. He went on to broaden his life experiences by completing a Ski season in Meribel and travelling extensively across South East Asia, India and Nepal. He funded these experiences by working for a year in Sydney for the New South Wales Government.
Upon returning from his travels James set about building a career in Financial Services working for Equifax in their Commercial Credit Team and then HBOS in asset finance. He moved to HSBC in 2005 and quickly identified that his passion lay in financial advice. He spent the next few years developing his skills as a Commercial Financial Adviser specialising in advising businesses and their owners on all areas of financial planning from protection and investments, through to retirement planning and company pensions and employee benefits.
He moved to Barclays as a Corporate Wealth Adviser in 2012 where he helped build the new proposition and further developed his knowledge around Corporate Protection and Auto Enrolment, advising larger companies through the pitfalls of the new pension's legislation. He was awarded with the 'Richard Phelps award' for his contribution to the business in 2013.
James has three main objectives when advising clients:
Away from work James has a diverse range of interests. He enjoys skiing and sailing holidays with his wife and two young daughters and spends time competing in Triathlons and runs an investment club. He also has a love of music and once a month you can find him at his DJ-residency in a local music venue!
Upon leaving college where he gained a Diploma in Business Studies, Graham started his career with Lloyds Bank plc. He successfully completed his exams becoming an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Bankers. Graham remained with Lloyds Bank for 7 years before leaving to join Britannia Building Society where he managed a number of branches within the network. It was during this time that he became interested in financial planning and the benefits of appropriate financial advice to customers.
In 1993 Graham re-joined Lloyds Bank as a financial consultant and after a successful period providing bespoke financial advice to his clients, he was promoted to a sales management role managing a team of professional financial advisers.
In 1999 Graham decided to move back into a client facing role and secured a position as a Financial Adviser at HSBC Bank plc, primarily providing personal financial planning advice. His professionalism and technical skills allowed him to progress into a Commercial Financial Adviser role within the commercial banking segment of HSBC.
Graham spent the next 10 years providing bespoke commercial financial advice to commercial / corporate customers and individual financial planning advice to their principals.

Graham's ethos is that 'the client comes first'. He believes that providing high levels of customer service and quality advice builds strong relationships with his clients and allows him to become their trusted adviser.
Outside of work he enjoys spending time with his wife and two children, training his dogs and riding his 1979 Harley Davidson.

Having completed a degree in European Marketing, which involved studying and working in France, Sarah completed her studies with a post graduate Diploma in Marketing in 1996. She took her first marketing position as a Product Manager at Homelux Trent, working on brand management and new product development.
In 1999 Sarah took on the role of Senior Product Manager at Express Dairies and was responsible for the marketing of the 'Shakey Jake' milkshake brand throughout the UK.
Having moved on from Express Dairies, Sarah took the position of Marketing and Communications Manager at Eversheds Solicitors where she coordinated the regional and national marketing activities for legal services.
In 2002 Sarah accepted the position of UK Marketing Manager for Bavaria UK Ltd, a Dutch based brewer. As a key member of the management team, Sarah enjoyed influencing business strategy and was responsible for all marketing communication for Bavaria UK Ltd and all its beer brands.
Sarah is creative, conscientious and trustworthy. She has a logical mind with an ability to see how marketing theories can be applied in practical terms to ensure business objectives are met.
Sarah has recently returned from a short career break after the birth of her two children. She is delighted to be working on marketing strategy and new business development as part of the HFB Financial Planning team, helping to enhance the client experience with HFB.
The HFB team are pleased to have someone with Sarah's expertise on the team.
Outside of work Sarah enjoys skiing, cycling, travelling and spending time with her family and friends.

Richard took his first step into financial services straight from school and joined Equity & Law, which later became AXA. He gained extensive experience of the pensions market and very quickly became a technical expert.
As a result of a desire to further his education, Richard went to Nottingham Trent University and completed a BA (Hons) degree in Criminology, achieving a 2:1. He then broadened his experience further by gaining a place on the prestigious Marconi Communications Graduate scheme and during his 2 years at the Company was able to develop some excellent consultancy skills.
Realising that his calling in life was to help people achieve their financial goals, in early 2003 Richard decided to join HSBC Bank plc as a Financial Planning Manager. He spent the first 3 years in two of HSBC's flagship retail branches, advising clients on their personal financial planning needs using a focused holistic approach. He quickly built a fantastic reputation as a top performing adviser who put his clients at the heart of everything he did. In late 2006 Richard accepted an invitation to join HSBC's Commercial Financial Advisory business and based himself in Northamptonshire. Over the next 7 years he continued to build upon his skill set and became a trusted adviser to many businesses and business owners.
He is passionate about building long term relationships based on trust and respect and acts with honesty and integrity in everything he does. He is QCF level 4 qualified and will be enhancing his professional qualifications further as he moves towards Chartered status. Financial planning is a very complex area and with an ever changing landscape. Richard believes it is crucial to provide not only outstanding financial advice but exceptional ongoing customer service that is tailored to each client's individual needs.

Outside work you're mostly likely to find Richard on a golf course. He's been a member of Hearsall Golf Club in Coventry for over 25 years and maintains a 10 handicap. In 2009 he achieved a lifelong ambition of making a hole in one and has a lowest gross competitive score to date of 70. In the summer months he also plays cricket and is the Vice Captain and opening batsman for Massey Ferguson's 20/20 cricket team in the Coventry 20 over's league.
Jo has spent 22 years working for the NHS in a variety of roles as a nurse, a midwife and most recently, as an assistant practitioner in General Practice. In the Summer of 2017 she left the NHS to work alongside and support the team at Rutland Financial Services. Jo enjoys cooking, music and reading.
Charlotte joined HSBC Bank (then Midland) in 1980. For 10 years she worked in branch banking undertaking various roles on the retail side, in several branches and then in the area office. She then moved into a regulated Investment Officer role and from there progressed to the role of Financial Planning Manager in 1990, where the focus was on looking after the financial planning needs of personal clients.
In 1994 Charlotte moved into the business market working with a team of Commercial Managers across three business centres. The role evolved over the years but always involved working closely with the business and commercial customers providing a comprehensive, holistic and ongoing planning service to meet their needs. Whilst there were opportunities to move on, Charlotte chose to remain as a Commercial Adviser as she enjoyed meeting with and dealing directly with clients. She remained committed to, and passionate about providing good sound advice and ongoing service and built many long-standing relationships. She helped businesses and their owners plan to build security for themselves now and for the future.
Following HSBC's decision to withdraw from providing face to face financial planning advice to its commercial customers in 2013, Charlotte left the bank after 33 years service. Her commitment to giving excellent customer service by supporting and advising clients however remained. With this in mind she was excited to join HFB Financial Planning Ltd working alongside like-minded people.
Charlotte is a professionally qualified adviser with an excellent track record of providing a quality professional service to her clients for over 20 years. She remains passionate and committed to providing good service and sound holistic advice.
Away from work Charlotte enjoys spending time with her daughter including looking after their dog, cats and other animals. She is busy refurbishing her home and is also a keen gardener. Charlotte loves the countryside, walking, cycling, horse riding, travel, cooking, music, sewing and reading. She also loves following Eventing and the England Rugby Team.
After leaving college in 1986 Alison commenced a career with Midland Bank, (HSBC Bank Plc), on a Management Trainee Programme. She completed the CIB banking exams becoming an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Bankers. Alison went on to undertake a variety of roles such as Commercial Lending, Relationship Management, Corporate Banking and several Branch Manager positions in the retail bank.
In 2003, she began a role within the commercial team arranging workplace pension schemes and other employee benefits for commercial clients. Alison was promoted to Senior Employee Benefits Manager, a role that she continued in until the bank withdrew its employee benefits proposition in 2008. Alison was promoted to Commercial Financial Advisor and spent the next three years advising businesses and their principals in all areas of financial planning advice.
In the summer of 2013, HSBC Bank made a decision to withdraw its service of face-to-face financial advice. Alison took this opportunity to leave the Bank after 27 years and after a short spell as a Partner at Prudential Financial Planning, joined former colleagues at HFB Financial Planning Limited.
It is important to Alison to fully understand her client's needs so she can deliver a first class, professional service tailored to that client. Alison has a wealth of experience which enables her to provide an excellent ongoing service to her clients and is interested in being part of her client's journey towards prosperity.
Outside of work, Alison is married and has 2 daughters who have a strong passion for dance. She attends a variety of health, sport and fitness activities and loves family holidays.

Iain now has some 33 years in the Financial Services Industry, all of them advising clients on their financial planning needs.
Prior to his financial career and as a result of his father being in the Foreign Office, he spent most of his childhood abroad, living in a variety of countries, Czechoslovakia, Singapore, Kuwait, Bulgaria, Iraq, Greece, to name a few. An honours degree was achieved in 1978 at Hull University, where he majored in Economics. Then a short time was spent in the Licenced Trade before being commissioned into the army in 1981.
After leaving the regular army he commenced his career in finance in 1985, whilst continuing with a TA commitment for several years. Initially, he learnt his trade with The Equitable Life Assurance Society where he remained for 16 years, until a move was forced upon him as a result of Equitable Life closing to new business.
His career continued with a number of well-known Wealth Assurance companies both in the Independent and Restricted space. Hargreaves Lansdown, St. James's Place and Towry being perhaps, the most noteworthy.
A strong desire to have more control over his business for the remainder of his career led to partnership with one of the UK's largest Networks, 'Intrinsic' in 2014.
Iain ran his business as a Sole Trader for four years and when the exciting opportunity arose within the Network to join HFB Financial Planning Ltd he took it and is now part of a larger team working with the same goals in mind.
He is a professionally qualified financial adviser with a successful record of providing financial advice to clients and building long term relationships through trust and fully understanding his client's needs. He is enthusiastic and has chosen to remain in a client facing role as he enjoys meeting clients and helping them plan for their long-term future. Iain has spent his career building his brand through honesty, integrity, technical expertise and taking a straight forward approach to helping clients achieve their goals and aspirations.
Outside of work, Iain used to be a keen runner which included running for charity in many Marathons (including 10 London) over a 25-year period. Now the running has given way to walking, with daily targets set and mostly achieved! Iain enjoys spending time with his wife and son. He also enjoys music, playing snooker, socialising and history traveling within the UK to unvisited - historical destinations to broaden his knowledge of our history, towns, and countryside.
Chartered Insurance Practitioner
Simon has a wealth of experience within the financial services industry, having spent the last 30 years advising clients on their financial planning needs.
Simon started his career with Sun Alliance in Watford where he trained in all areas of insurance practice, gaining his first professional qualifications, (Associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute).
He moved on to HSBC Bank plc where he forged a career for 25 years. Initially managing a team of advisers based out of High Wycombe, Simon moved on to a training role within the bank before returning to a customer facing role, providing professional financial planning advice to clients. Later Simon specialised in providing advice to commercial clients.
In the summer of 2013 HSBC Bank made the decision to withdraw its service of providing face to face holistic financial advice to its commercial clients. Simon has took this opportunity to leave the bank after 25 years and join some of his HSBC colleagues as one of the Primary Members of the financial adviser team at HFB Financial Planning Ltd.
Simon helps his clients identify the financial planning needs within their business, whilst managing the key individual's personal and financial goals, which are often closely linked. He then provides bespoke financial planning advice to help his clients achieve their goals. He appreciates the time pressures facing business people and their desire to have someone they trust dealing with their financial affairs.
Simon has always strived to give a high level professional service to his clients and aims to go well beyond 'just what is required' for his clients. This attitude is highlighted in achieving his Chartered Insurance Practitioner status from the Chartered Insurance Institute.
Outside of work Simon is the proud father of two 'lovely' children - he is a keen reader, loves to travel and enjoys 'trying to improve' at numerous sports - he is always open to an invitation to play at Wentworth!
Diane & Jackie
Rutland Financial Services became a trading style of HFB Financial Planning Ltd in January 2017 upon the retirement of former business principles Diane Roberts & Jackie Manby.
Diane & Jackie wanted to ensure continuity of service for their clients and felt HFB’s experience and shared values would fit well with their clients.
HFB Financial Planning Ltd took over Rutland Financial Services back in January 2017. HFB Financial Planning has thirteen advisers based at various locations throughout the UK.
Caroline has 20 years’ experience in commercial, sales & marketing roles. After graduating from University with a BSc (Hons) degree in Applied Psychology & Computing, Caroline joined BT on their graduate scheme as a commercial manager where she gained a wealth of experience across BT’s global portfolio of products and services.
Choosing to focus her career, Caroline moved to work in Sales and Marketing across the BT portfolio, then specialised in Wireless technology as the Partnership Director for the BT Group. This specialism led her to become the Sales & Marketing Director for one of BT’s partners in the Wi-Fi space before taking a career pause to start a family.
With Caroline’s passion for delivering the best possible solution to her clients, she decided to replicate her skills in the finance arena and qualify as a Mortgage and Protection adviser within HFB Financial Planning. Her focus is on providing her clients with the most cost-effective lending solutions that perfectly fit their requirements, whilst removing the complexity, saving them time, money and stress.
Caroline is a dynamic professional with a highly successful background. She is committed to achieving and exceeding her objectives and she has the focus and the determination to provide exceptional standards of service, exceeding customer expectation.
Away from work, Caroline is sport obsessed, from cycling 100-mile rides, to completing the London & New York Marathons, climbing Kilimanjaro to various triathlons including a half ironman. She is also a keen netball player. She lives in Ipswich with her husband and two children who are equally sport mad!
